Last Friday on the first day of practice, Greer High had two television stations and a local newspaper there covering their practice.
Their practice consisted of having players holding those "pillow-type" dummies.
The high school league ruled that this was deemed "excessive hitting" and ruled that GHS is banned from both pre-season jamborees and scrimmages as well as competing in the playoffs.
They have an appeal this coming Monday.
I guess that old guy that was (is?) in charge of their press box that unbeknowingest to him, The Mayor had gotten permission from the entire GHS coaching staff and Greer radio to sit in their press box when the 'Dogs went up there back in 2002. After he was adament about my not sitting anywhere whatsoever in that press box since he hadn't been told anything, I had to sit on the roof and keep my stats while hopefully nothing blew away of which I'd never get back.
After the 'Dogs stopped Sinclair Cannon on that 4th down play and then ran out the clock, I went down the stairs and set-up my stuff right beside where the old man was sitting to do all of my reporting.
To this day he has yet to say a word to me.
Guess he and his wife, Gertrude, can sit back on those November Friday evenings now and not worry about staying up past their 8:00 bedtime!

They are back in already! The HSL ruled today and put them back in. Maybe Blythewood should have only done it once last year and they would have got back in. It still seems weird that last year a team that everyone expected to dominate, and did, was banned but this year a team that nobody is expecting to do good is let back in. I still don't understand how this keeps happening every year.
Sinclair Cannon, what a great high school player he was!

When Greer made their state championship run in 2003, I had to cover it for the Spartanburg Herald. I just knew that if GHS won, I'd have to get quotes from Sinclair. All of a sudden, their kicker comes out of nowhere and nails like five field goals or so.
I found him after the game and nobody whatsoever is talking to him but mom and dad. I asked him a few questions and he and his parents thanked me repeatedly and so forth. The only bad thing was, none of his quotes got in the paper but the paper did put that he did a "heck of a job" that their coach said.
It's too bad that Sinclair never made a huge impact at Tennessee as we all seemed to expect him to have.
That 2002 game at Greer and then to follow it up at home with a win over #1 Union...and then the win at Clinton's Homecoming were all incredible!
I don't think I slept those entire weekends!
